I know I am getting away from pure sports writing here, but I will get back to that soon enough. I am covering Howard and Mount de Sales baseball and I will write about that tomorrow.
But today, I am going to talk a bit more of the person that critiques me more than anyone. well maybe not more than anyone; My daughter Madison is quick to tell me that she hates that sweater vest I have on or tell me how my Chrysler Sebring convertible is just not really cool. Meanwhile my wife is very picky when it comes to critiques and I am guessing that's why we have been married so long.
When I started blogging, I wanted it to be fun and relaxed and something everyone would want to spend time reading. Now Kosater does know sports, but to get the worldwide (or county wide) appeal that I am looking for, I have to write stuff that other people (women) might want to read.
The one person I have that will give me her honest opinion about a blog is a lady at work. Now, some of you know where I work and some of you don't. Some of you know who my friends are and some of you don't. And for now, we will leave it that way. I will protect my friend at work by changing her name to Alex. Alex has kids in school in Macon that are athletes and I may mention some things in here that sounds familiar to someone, but no one will know who Alex is.
Alex will read my blog when I ask her to, and yesterday I asked her to read my little league blog. I saw her today at work and asked her about it, and she said the words no one wants to hear, something to the extent of, Umm I didn't think it was your best, and I think you were on the right track but it really didn't grab me.
I masked the obvious disappointment (I had thought the story was comical) and told her thank you for being my biggest critique. I mean , this is not someone that I always agree with. I have been thrown out of her office because I rolled my eyes at her when she started complaining about officiating at a high school football game. So , obviously she is not scared to offer her opinion of me.
Alex has a son who is a freshman at a school in Macon and he is a very talented athlete, and she has bantered me to write about him(although she is somewhat teasing) My follow up is that I don't write about middle school kids, very often, and I sure don't cover middle school games (unless I am told to) I mean I am a sports journalist freelancing stringing fool who will cover anything, but middle school sport ? No (unless I am told to) But I am sure one day soon, in the next year or so, I will have to (or get to) write about her son, (if the coaches don't screw him up, which they very well could)
So Alex thought my brief little league story was not great and wasnt my best work. I am dying for opinions good or bad. I want to write interesting stuff, and I realize I cant ride the Haley Gordon bus forever.
