Work, or in general, my job, is not something I enjoy. I am not one of those people who love their job so much that they jump out of bed every morning and says YAY work is here work is here. I am more like, yawn , yawn, close eyes close eyes, yawn , drag myself up, yawn, go get coffee and then take a shower. The mind is still going, lay back down please, don't go today don't go today, but once in the shower the mind starts working. Or should I say running. What have I forgot to do ? What is on the schedule for this day. Once I make it to the shower I am going to work.
I have worked at the same place for the last 30 years, and actually I am retired. However I went back and now work 32 hours a week. It can be painful, but it get the bills paid,{mainly because I married well} However, it has always just been a job. I hear stories of people loving where they go everyday, but I am not one of them. My thoughts today are going to lean on what kind of job I could've been happy going to everyday ?
1. Professional athlete- good money, fame, more money. Yes, I think I could be happy doing that everyday
2. Coach- Sports everyday yes, notice I didn't say I want to be a teacher coach I just want to coach the sport of my choice, which would beeeee-anyone know __ ?? really really ? Ok if you don't know, it would be baseball, basketball, football, swimming in that order. Soccer? no thank you
3.sportwriter - Have you ever had to have anything when a deadline is involved ? I am sure you have but deadline writing can get stressful. I feel it sometimes, and at my age and typing skills it gets difficult at times, but overall I enjoy my part time job.
4-Grant writer- my friend Alex does that and she doesn't ever seem stressed out, so ya maybe I would like to do that. Plus, she almost never works on Friday. I think Alex has it made. What do I have to do to get that job,
5. college student- It seems fairly easy- wake up go to class, go eat, nap, go to another class, eat again, nap again, facebook, twitter, eat again, nap, hang out, and eat again, nap, facebook, twitter, go to bed, and also have endless amounts of money because mom and dad want you happy. Where do I apply?
This is all I can think of right now. My mind endlessly runs with topic ideas, but I am not real pleased by the results I am getting for the numbers who actually ready my hard work, I am open to writing on anything
PS_ the reason I am so tired this week is I have stayed up watching the NBA all week, and have enjoyed watching the SPURS old guys playing the game like it is supposed to be played.

random thoughts about random sports
I will start off with my opinion about the Atlanta Braves.
I think the Braves are playing very hard all the time, however, they are not very talented at this point in time. The pitching staff is full of rookie relievers and two veterans, one which hasn't been good in several years(Johnson) and another (Grilli) who still has something left in the tank. I am guessing that Grilli will be traded to a contender later in the season.
The starting staff is average. I like Alex Wood and Shelby Miller, and Tehran is a good 3rd starter. The other two guys have to come through and I just don't know about that.
our centerfielders, Young and Maybin , are better that BJ, but still wont hit much, they never have. Kelly Johnson and Gomes in left field are two players who could barely find jobs in the off season, Only Freeman. Markakis, and Simmons are every day starters in the big leagues.
Now, I am also tired of the Braves trying to make Freddie Freeman the face of the Braves. That title should go to the best player on the team, and that is not Freddie. Until I see him drive in 100 runs, until I see him hit 300, until I see him lead by doing more than hugging, well I just have to go with Andrelton Simmons, who is the best shortstop in baseball since Ozzie Smith and is also hitting in the 270's this year. It is his team right now.
With state playoff baseball starting up, I have a few things to say about that
Veterans thrashes Perry for a region championship. David Coffey, the best baseball coach in the area not named Hiller, found a way to win a big game AGAIN
Rutland played the best game I have seem them play in three years and beat Jackson and hold a number two seed and get a home series. Watch Codie Rozier a smooth fielding shortstop to key tha Hurricanes, along with Nick Simmons and Malik Bond on the mound.
Mount de Sales is a team I am just not sure of. They certainly deserve to make the playoffs
FPD looks like they are in despite losing to Stratford this week.
Stratford will be having sleepless nights waiting to see if they make the tournament. They were 16 last week and 16 make it in. But they did beat FPD and that shouldn't hurt
Cheers for the weekend

Sunday Blues
I hate rain
It is depressing and worst of all it makes you very lazy.
I was supposed to work a baseball game on Friday but it of course got rained out, and that was basically all I had planned for the entire weekend. So to say I didn't do much that took any effort would be an understament.
I watched three Braves games over the weekend and overall I am impressed by the efforts they are showing. This team has some heart for sure. They say that Markakis and Gomes are the kind of guys that wont let their teammates play any less than 100% and I feel like they are the leaders. I have been watching Chris Johnson loaf for two years now and all of a sudden he is scoring from first on a double. That is great to see. I don't know how good the Braves will be this year, but at least they are playing the game like it is supposed to be played. But lets admit it, they will lose Tuesday because we only have three good starting pitchers. The last two are worse than horrible.
I also watched some pro basketball and I came up with these quick observations. Dallas is terrible, Portland is overrated, San Antonio is way way old, and Golden State has as good a chance to win it all as anyone else. The Warriors are much more than a bunch of pretty boy 3-shooters. They can get physical .
I guess I have to mention the Hawks somewhere in here and I know I should be excited about them, but for some reason I am not. I just expect them to lay that egg somewhere. Everyone says its not a great year if they don't make the finals, but I say if we win a series its a success. So used to bad teams I don't know what to do with a good one.
Happy Monday everyone

Jones County does things right
I have been in the Middle Georgia area for all of my life, which by the way my eyes are failing, has been quite a long time. I remember over the years a few things about the high school program in Jones County, but mainly that they probably had one of the coolest nicknames in the area. I wish I would have thought to ask the question to the many Jones County people I talked to last night while I was watching the Greyhounds sweep Grovetown to advance to the state baseball playoffs for what must be the 90th straight year. Why the greyhound as a mascot ?
Jones County has always played great baseball, Willie Green and Rondell White both had long MLB careers and now Terrance Gore just got called up by the Royals, and it seems like we have always had one guy from that school doing something playing pro baseball. But all of a sudden, the football team had a legitimate chance to make it to the championship game, the basketball team made it to the elite 8, the wrestling team had a state championship winner, and the baseball team is doing its thing with a 19-3 record. Where is it coming from ?
First of all Jones County is probably the BEST venue for high school football. They have packed the place for years, even though the teams have usually been only average. They have added seats to the place over the years, and the fans tailgate, they are loud, and they are very hospitable to the press. It is a great way to spend a Friday night. But this year, something different happened. its like someone gave a breath of fresh air to the city of Gray, and they became this areas winnersville. Sure Warner Robins had Northside winning state and Warner Robins in the elite eight in basketball and HO CO winning state in baseball, but Jones County is one school doing crazy things.
So the question is why? Why all the winning ?
Winning is contagious that's why
And it all starts with football
Justin Rogers
Justin Rogers
Justin Rogers
That is the answer I continuously got when I asked Jones County people where all the winning started. This guy changed the feeling in the school when he immediately came in and declared that he would win football games.
Rogers is the new football coach that led the Hounds somewhere they have never ever been, which is deep in the playoffs before losing on the the last play of the game to a team that made it to the state finals and had Northside on the ropes. Northside, a team that Jones County beat.
Rogers comes in , immediately loses his best offensive threat in Walker Juhan, puts in a crazy spread offense and beats almost everyone on his schedule. And that my friends, has changed the persona of Jones County High School.
I salute Jones County High School, where they don't have metal detectors in school and have only one security officer, where the principal and assistant principal handles discipline, where everyone plays a sport, and now where they have figured out how to win .

thursday night baseball follies
The feeling of summer has definitely taken over and with that leads to a lot of coverage for baseball. Last night I had the Stratford and FPD game, a game that showed both the good and the bad of high school baseball games. It also became one of my most frustrating nights as a deadline sports writer.
Thursday nights game was at Stratford, which has a great facility and has had some excellent baseball teams over the last decade. The 7:00 pm start time on week night is not a great starting time for newspaper people, so I was hoping for a quick game and quick interviews so I could get the story in by 9:30.
Stratford was coming off of a 21-2 loss to Tattnall, but played fairly solid and had a 1-0 lead after three innings. FPD got the lead back and led 3-1 going into the last inning,(it should have been 2-1 except for a costly 2 out error) but the Eagles just fell apart in the last inning and made it look like a blowout when it ended 13-1. The scoreboard said 5 errors in Stratford, but I was sitting with Stratford people and we counted at least six errors in the seventh inning alone, to go with at least three during the rest of the game. Jackson Pyles pitched a great game for Stratford and kept his team in the game for six innings, but his defense did not return the favor.
Meanwhile Austin Cox, a Mercer signee was tested, but pitched through trouble in several innings to get a win, and also gave a great interview after the game. He will do FPD and Mercer proud.
My views of these two teams is that Chance Reynolds and Stratford are obviously a little bit down this year talent wise, but really, they played well for six innings. The last inning wasn't bad, it was maybe the worst fielding inning I have ever seen in a high school baseball game, and it left Reynolds almost speechless after the game. But Reynolds is probably on of the two or three best coaches in Middle Georgia and he will fix what's broken.
FPD doesn't really do anything special on the baseball field but they are solid all the way around. They are in a battle with Mount de Sales for the second spot in the region. Denny Bryant is in his first year as the head coach and his kids play hard but something is missing and I cant really put my finger on it. They are 14-3 on the year, but a lot of these wins are gimme wins against weak Macon schools. It will be interesting to see what they can do the rest of the year and if they can take another step and challenge Tattnall.
Now last night I was on deadline and I was rushing all over the place to get stuff done. I got home at 9:40 on a 10:00 pm or so deadline and of course my computer would not recognize my email and it just kept doing the spinny thing that we all hate so much. After 15 minutes of it and several words that I will not put on here, I actually had to go to my neighbors house to get the story in. The story was not great I will admit, but I did the best I could on a frustrating night.
Note to John, take the work computer home so you will have a back-up.
Note to Stratford, 6:00pm start times are becoming quite popular
Note to FPD, you dont have to steal a base when you are leading 9-1
Have a great Friday everyone

Parents and friend
I know I am getting away from pure sports writing here, but I will get back to that soon enough. I am covering Howard and Mount de Sales baseball and I will write about that tomorrow.
But today, I am going to talk a bit more of the person that critiques me more than anyone. well maybe not more than anyone; My daughter Madison is quick to tell me that she hates that sweater vest I have on or tell me how my Chrysler Sebring convertible is just not really cool. Meanwhile my wife is very picky when it comes to critiques and I am guessing that's why we have been married so long.
When I started blogging, I wanted it to be fun and relaxed and something everyone would want to spend time reading. Now Kosater does know sports, but to get the worldwide (or county wide) appeal that I am looking for, I have to write stuff that other people (women) might want to read.
The one person I have that will give me her honest opinion about a blog is a lady at work. Now, some of you know where I work and some of you don't. Some of you know who my friends are and some of you don't. And for now, we will leave it that way. I will protect my friend at work by changing her name to Alex. Alex has kids in school in Macon that are athletes and I may mention some things in here that sounds familiar to someone, but no one will know who Alex is.
Alex will read my blog when I ask her to, and yesterday I asked her to read my little league blog. I saw her today at work and asked her about it, and she said the words no one wants to hear, something to the extent of, Umm I didn't think it was your best, and I think you were on the right track but it really didn't grab me.
I masked the obvious disappointment (I had thought the story was comical) and told her thank you for being my biggest critique. I mean , this is not someone that I always agree with. I have been thrown out of her office because I rolled my eyes at her when she started complaining about officiating at a high school football game. So , obviously she is not scared to offer her opinion of me.
Alex has a son who is a freshman at a school in Macon and he is a very talented athlete, and she has bantered me to write about him(although she is somewhat teasing) My follow up is that I don't write about middle school kids, very often, and I sure don't cover middle school games (unless I am told to) I mean I am a sports journalist freelancing stringing fool who will cover anything, but middle school sport ? No (unless I am told to) But I am sure one day soon, in the next year or so, I will have to (or get to) write about her son, (if the coaches don't screw him up, which they very well could)
So Alex thought my brief little league story was not great and wasnt my best work. I am dying for opinions good or bad. I want to write interesting stuff, and I realize I cant ride the Haley Gordon bus forever.

little league trip
It had been many years since I have been anywhere to watch any type of little league softball or baseball, mainly because I haven't had kids that age for quite a few years. In my years as a sports writer guy, I have probably covered little league baseball at least once a summer, but I have not been to a little league field for enjoyment purposes for a long time.
That changed Monday night when I went to see my bosses daughter play 10-u softball.
Now, some of you know where I work, and some don't. Some of you know who my boss is and some don't. I think for now, we just leave it at that. I don't really think it is important right now. I decided to go because I wanted to support Suzie Q (not her name) and maybe I even wanted to see if she was any good.
The game featured two teams with insects names. I guess girls softball doesn't want to see the tigers play the mets, because this game had the grasshoppers playing another name which I cant remember. My wife saw the uniforms of the grasshoppers and quickly commented on the nice costumes the girls had on. (Um Debbie, they are uniforms, not costumes) I mean Grasshoppers actually had socks with big dots all over them,
I will call the other team the bumblebees which might be accurate, but maybe not. The bumblebees obviously had a good draft because they had all the talent. The grasshoppers struggled early and I think the bees put up a 4 spot in the first. Then Suzie Q came in and struck out 3 batters in a row, and then the Bees scored 5 more runs, with Suzie Q ripping a single to fight field that got between some legs and was quickly described as a homerun to all who saw it. (That's little league)
With the big lead, that was the end of Suzie Q on the mound, and after a scoreless inning I decided that I had seen enough.
As for the night, well I enjoyed watching insects in costumes battle, and now I know that Little Suzie Q has got some game. But the Bees did lose the costume battle.

High school baseball in Macon
If the truth be told, most of the public high schools in Macon could care less about baseball
If you believe that is not an accurate statement, one quick look at the overall records of schools of the schools in Macon over the last five years will prove the point
5 year records
Northeast 3-48
Southwest 6-50
Central 17-60
Westside 33-78
Rutland 54-50
Howard 75-54
Two winning records out of the bunch.
I remember last year at the beginning of the year, I covered a Northeast-Southwest baseball game and I looked up the records over the last 10 years or so, and could not find more than 10 wins for either team over that period. Four out of the six public schools obviously are not worried about wining baseball games, because they have had the same coach for years and years despite all the losing.
Rutland had some success five years ago, and have a 13-5 record this year, but a lot of that is because they dropped down a class and are playing in what has to be the weakest region in the state. The Columbus schools along with Westside and Southwest make up for a lot of easy wins. But at least Wally Pritchard has put together a team that will make the state playoffs.
Howard has been the best baseball school in Macon for quite a few years, but Danny Slaughter has struggled this year. I saw them drop a 15-0 game last Friday against Veterans to drop them to 2-15, but I did see where they won back to back games against Northside and Baldwin to get them back to 4-15. Heck 4-15 is a good record in Macon Ga.
That's not to say that the private schools are not playing well. Even Mount de Sales, who has had issues winning games in the GISA, IS 11-3 this year, mainly because they get a schedule of region games against teams that aren't very good. I have seen FPD play and they aren't too bad and they are also 11-3, but they have played Southwest and Westside four time. Stratford struggled early and from what I hear, they have no pitching whatsoever.
That leaves Tattnall Square as head and shoulders better than anyone in Macon. Of course that has been the case for the last 10 years probably, because they have Joey Hiller, a baseball coach coaching baseball.
I think all of the private schools will continue to win, and if you want to see good high school baseball games, watch the games when they play each other.
I will be trying to come up with the top 10 baseball players in Macon over the next week or so
