wrong wrong wrong

Ok Ok I admit it
MY TOP 10 rankings little bit inaccurate.
Maybe it's because I see a lot of public school basketball and haven't seen Stratford play at all.
Maybe I judge from what I hear many times and not what I see.
But for whatever  reason, I have been unfair to at least two players in my top 11.
Ok I know it was only one game that I saw, but I got all I needed from it.
And I humbly come back and admit my mistake
But to not rank Nate Brooks in the top 10, and to rank Quintez Cephus as low as four or five is just , is just, well its just stupid.
And it wont happen again.
Lets talk about Cephus. This guy is just unreal. His game is better now than it ever has been and I had to see it to believe it. He is a d1 basketball player no ifs and or buts about it. Iwas stupid enough to rank him behind a few people that I should not have, but today, by my control, (it is my blog) I move him BACK  to where he belongs. He is the best player in Macon. MY former number one, Khavon, is incredible, but he is a sophomore and will have his time. Right now, we really only have one number one and I hope he plays like it for the rest of the year.

Now, Nate Brooks put on a show that you don't see too often in a high school game. He had four thunderous dunks and he did them all with anger. I know he reads my stuff and I know he thinks he belongs to be much higher. But I do have some pretty good kids at the top of that list. I will slip him into the top ten at number ten, and I do love his game, but lets let the big fella get a taste of big time basketball before we move him up more than that. Am I doubting his ability to do so? Heck no, , but show me its an every game thing young man.

I am so happy to see TSA getting a chance to slay the dragon which is Greenforest. Sure a win is doubtful but so was the win over SAC and they accomplished that. Im rooting for my guys Aubrien(best kept secret in Macon) and Ahmad Barron to play big on Thursday.

I don't know what else I can say about my guy Derrick Evans. If I had one shot to win a game and had to pick anyone in Macon to take it , I would pick him. That's a no brainer. Kid is a hoop guy and that's what we have so many stupid recruiters who cannot see his upside on the basketball court. He is the Magic Man and don't be surprised if he does something crazy on the big stage.

THE 10 best

I know you all have been waiting for this list to come out.
Honestly after working Wednesday night's games I may have moved a few folks around or even dropped them off the list, but that is done now. Some seasons are over by now, so obviously it is time to get this done.
So here are the top 10 male high school basketball players in Macon, Georgia

10. Jaikez Mann: He makes the lost for the very first time and moves all the way to number 10 because he put Rutland on his back and led them into a rather unlikely playoff berth. This guy put up huge numbers down the stretch so he deserves to be here. I am sure Rutland, who made a deep run last year, is on the way back up with players like him

9. I really do love what Jarvis Smith is doing at Tattnall because he is a different kind of coach. When something goes wrong in a game and a player is complaining, Smith stops it right away. His kids play extremely hard for him and Tattnall needs to do whatever they need to do to keep this guy happy. Smith has several good players but the one who makes them go is Aubrien Kemp. This kid has been a staple of Tattnall athletics forever and I will say that he is a definite college athlete. He has turned himself into a very good basketball player. Up to this year, I would not have said that because he was fairly one dimensional. The biggest problem is that he couldn't shoot. I am guessing that he worked hard this summer to improve his game, because now he can not only defend, he can score. He has put up some big numbers and he needs to take over in the playoffs. I really think he can.

8. Terry McCoy: Love this guys game. He looks as if he would only be a shooter because he is so thin, but he can defend and get in the paint and I love watching him shoot the three. He is maybe the best deep ball threat in Macon, and he wont back away from taking the shot. I am truly hoping that Central makes it to Macon because it would be wonderful to see what the city of Macon could do for a home team.

7. Nick Hargrove: One of the legs that got Southwest back to the playoffs, but they stumbled at the end of the season and ended up a four seed. With Justin Slocum gone next year it will be up to Hargrove to get them back to the playoffs. He's a true point guard who looks to score first, and he needs a great summer to get to where he needs to be as a prospect for college.

6.O'Showen Williams: I have been on this guys bandwagon all year long and he proved what he was capable of when Cephus went down. I think it was 30 points a game for 3 games. HE IS a college level basketball player. He prob is not a d1 guy but who cares. He can play at the college level. Here is hoping that he has a strong finish to the season and he gets the accolades that he deserves.

5.Justin Slocum: Yes he was my number one guy but he faded a bit down the stretch and his team did too. The loss to Rutland in the region tournament was crippling and it led to a first round loss in the state playoffs. I truly thought the Patriots could make a run. That does not say that Slocum is not a big time talent and he led Southwest back into the playoffs. I am really just sad to see his high school career end.

4. Quintez Cephus:  I think  I am ranking this guy right where he belongs. He is a great talent who can put numbers up for sure, and I am hoping Stratford will make a run in the playoffs. He has been Stratford basketball for five years now, and it will be very interesting how they fare in the playoffs. I am thinking a semi-final trip is a success and anything else a bit of a disappointment. I don't think Cephus has to score 30 for them to win anymore, because other weapons have emerged. But I hope he does something special to end his magical high school career.

3. Derrick Evans: I know how many points he scored last game. It really does not matter to me though. This guy does not have to score to be one of the best point guards in the state. You see Derrick understands that his job is to make everyone else better, and he does that game in and game out. He knows when he has to take over and he knows when he needs to distribute. That my friends is what Central , a team with three stars and some very good role players, are 25-2 and winners of 18 straight. I don't know how Andre Taylor will replace him.

2. It will  help that Taylor has a legit 6'10 center back next year. I have been watching Kentrevious Jones play for three years now and this year he has grown up and started to become what he can be. He is a d1 basketball player if he keeps his other stuff straight and he is a big reason why Central is dominating this year. He plays big in big games and if he wants to take over he can. He is at least 270 pounds, but it looks like he has worked hard to be able to run the court. The sky is the limit for this kid.

1. If the sky is the limit for Big K, I don't know where the limit is for Khavon Moore. Oh my god, this kid is the most talented basketball player to come out of Macon since, well let me think, Gerald Fitch ? Am I leaving someone else out ? He cruised to a 27/16 line the other night in the state playoffs and that  does not include 8 blocks. He is a very humble kid who may need to be a bit more aggressive early in the game, but hello he is only a sophomore, which make him what ? 15 years old ? He will have his work cut out for him against Calhoun, but I really don't think it will sl

THE top high school baskeball players in Macon

I know I am getting slack and slow but I have been a bit busy with other things. I am thankful for my loyal few fans and I am slowly heading towards 12,000 hits on this thing.
When I sat down to do my top 10 list I quickly realized that 10 was not enough to totally explore the talent in this city this year. I could easily go 30 but that is just too much work for me lol. So I decided to go with 20.
The next decision I had to make was to list all 20 in one blog, or divide them up. If I divide them up, (which I decided to do) I have to list numbers 11-20 today and then follow with the others the next day.
So today you get numbers 11-20
20. Nathan Hunt: The Covenant Academy sophomore is putting up nice number this year on a team that could win a state title. Matt Chambless did not want to give me names because he feels like he has five guys that belong on the list(Khrstian Tate went 25 and 14 the last game) but after constant badgering he finally gave me some. My only hope for Covenant is that he can get to play GHSA teams in the very near future, because he feels like he can play with many of them. Nathan is a 6'5 kid who has plenty of time to make noise.
19. Dartavious Thompson: He plays at Central Fellowship and I know virtually nothing about him, except for the fact that he averages 21 points a game. The Lancers have had some pretty good basketball teams the last few years and this is the kid that makes them go this year.
18.Jimmy Marshall: He's a big tall guy for Tattnall Square who spends half his time dominating and half his time disappearing. He is a post player who needs to be on the block doing dirty work and his numbers will come. I have seen him three times this year and he shows flashes, but then he gets away from what he does best. The Trojans need Jimmy Marshall to be a player in the state tournament or they will be watching very soon.
17.Samone Reed: He actually plays today and I will be honest with you. I saw Westside play earlier in the year and I didn't notice this kid, but he has been putting up some numbers since then. Westside has to have someone else step up and give Khavon some help on offense, and this is one of the guys who has done it. I will let you know more about him after I see him play today
16.Ben Elder: I saw him play three times early and did not like what he was doing at all. He was taking a lot of bad shots and not really helping Westside win games. I have heard he has turned the corner and is playing much better. I am excited to see him play.
15.Jordan Layne: The leader of a strong Covenant team who can do a little bit of everything on the court. I would like to see him get the chance to play against better competition because I believe he can handle it.
14. Calvin Slaughter: He is one of Tattnall's best players but he also disappears on certain nights. It is time for these kids to step up and be players every game. Kid can fill it up when he gets going and if he plays well Tattnall can make some noise. If not, they are probably done. I think he will step up.
13.Chris Quainter: What a job Howard coach Jay Lunce has done with this bunch. They are back in the playoffs in a tough region and they have done it by out working other teams. Most of that starts with this young man , who averages a double double. Good luck to them in the first round.
12.Marquise Jackson- Windsor: This guy has amazing numbers. Lets go 21ppg, 7 rb,6 assists, and 5 steals per game. That's a lot of numbers. Now to be totally honest, those numbers are hard to believe. I have charted games before (and I am quite good) and had a guy with 10 rebounds and 5 assists, and then the stats man for the school will come up to me and say wow what a game , so and so had 16 rebounds and 10 assists. Um no, lets be a little bit honest here. Anyways, this kid is about to lead Windsor to a second state championship and is very talented, no matter what his numbers are.
11. Nate Brooks: Stratford's big guy is going to be so important to this team over the next few weeks. I know they play against a team with a 6'10 guy in the first round, so it starts right away. This kid can be big and physical and that's what the Eagles need him to be. He had a great region tournament and has to continue being a beast as a defender and rebounder. Lets face it, Stratford has the stars, they need a few grinders right now and Nate Brooks, I think , is the most important player on this team heading into the playoffs. Are you up to it young fellow ?

basketball and life

I am delinquent again on my blogs but I will try and do better this week
I have been on the road the last week, first to Greensboro to see my son and then to Virginia to watch my daughter swim and watch Brenau dominate its conference meet. But now I am home and ready to catch up with some high school basketball.
Was I surprised that Stratford won the region tournament ? NOOOO why would I be when they have the best 2 players in the region. I mean I believed they would win the region football championship for the same reason but when it comes to basketball, it doesn't take as many to win. QT and O'Showen and some good role players can take the Eagles a long way. They need more than two to make it to the semis though and I am not sure at this point they have anyone else that will step up at this level of competition

I am also not surprised that Central won over Westside. Central is THAT good people, they really are. I believe they are the most likely team to get to the final four from Macon. They have a great deal of balance and a very deep bench. And as long as that point guard stays on the court, they have a chance.

But hey guess what Westside has a chance too. The Seminoles are very very good with maybe the best player in the state playing for them. As good as he has been this year , he has to find another level and maintain it for Westside to do damage. And the guys off the bench must contribute. Can they make it to the final four ? No Doubt they can.

Southwest had to beat Rutland in the consolation game to make any noise in the playoffs and they failed to do so, so I am expecting them to  lose in the first round. Justin Slocum as far as I know, is unsigned, hello people,,, get on that train.

Kudos to Rutland and Howard for improving throughout the year and making the state playoffs.

I also see that the Stratford girls beat (not upset) Tattnall to win the region and that Avant scored 19 points. I mean here is a girl that really doesn't have to play basketball because she has already signed with UGA to play  softball, but she plays because she loves to compete and loves her school.

Lets not forget Tattnall. I believe they will make noise in the state tournament on both the boys side and the girls side. Jarvis Smith has showed me that he can coach and he has a few big time athletes in Kemp, Slaughter,Marshall and Barron and they are quite capable of winning one or two games. The same can be said for the girls. The Stratford loss knocked them down a peg, which is not always a bad thing.
Now lets go watch some basketball

what I see for the playoffs

THE  playoffs are heading our way, I think as early as next week, I think this could be a banner year for Macon and surrounding teams.
Lets talk about some of them
Class A
FPD- I believe that if FPD can get in they can do a bit of damage. They struggle to score, so they have to rely on playing great defense. Henry Middlebrooks has been dropping the three ball which is key for them, but I would really like to see Champ Dawson step up. I have seen him good and I have seen him bad, but he does not seem to want to try and take a game over. They have a nice big man but he is a freshman and has a lot to learn. It is not out of the realm that they upset someone.

TATTNALL- Totally impressed by Jarvis Smith and the way he coaches. He does not put up with his players crying about bad calls or any of that and I love that. He has some talent on the team, with Kemp, Slaughter, Marshall, and Barron, but I need someone to step up every single game. Marshall needs to score on a regular basis inside if the Trojans are going to go past the first round

Stratford- QT sits and O'Showen goes off. It doesn't surprise me at all. But that has to continue now that Cephus is back. Is Stratford going to win state ? NO way, but they can win some games for sure. I need to see that post player step up and be a post player and not a three shooter. Jamie Dickey could win region but it will not be easy.

Central- So so good, they win when they aren't at full strength.I think they have won 15 straight and for whatever reason, Big K has sat the last three games before last night. I don't know if he played or not. McCoy is a cold stoned shooter who shoots until he finds it and Evans is simply the best two sport athlete in Macon BAR NONE.

Westside- Josh Grube is rolling with the number one player in Macon . The Seminoles have size, speed, shooters, all they need to make a run in the region tournament. But no one in that region lays down and it will be some interesting basketball. Lets see what Khavon does in the playoffs.

Southwest- Love em  but someone has got to score besides Slocum and Hargrove. Hello young Jordan Slocum its time to step up and help big bro win some games in the playoffs.

Warner Robins- I never talk about others away from Macon, but I will say right now that I believe Warner Robins will win state this year. They are that good with Donovan Brown, Marquez Callaway, and the unreal sophomore, Nelson. I had them against Jones County Tuesday and the Demons are down 8 with 46 second left and they came back and won the game in double overtime. Sorry to all my friends that are coaches, but Jamaal Garman is THE best basketball coach in Middle Georgia.

I know I don't talk much about girls basketball but congrats to Todd Whetsel, who got his 300th win last week. I am sure he has many more wins because I don't believe he reaches the age of 65 for at least another 5 years maybe ?

A word about Jibri Bryan- This guy was a class act and I was sick the entire night I heard of his death. He was a quality young man and as a writer, sometimes I can see the true color of a young man. This guy was the real deal and if he saw me he was going to speak to me. That's what young people are supposed to do when they see someone they know. Mercer will miss him and I will too.

I will be heading to Tattnall Square on Friday night. If you read my blog let me know. I love hearing from folks that read.  Cant wait to see ALLIE NATION rock Mount de Sales.
