I covered the Warner Robins and Miller Grove game Thursday night and I had to come home and write about it.
After all I am a WRHS graduate.
These are the facts from the game
Fact number 1 - Jacolbey Owens is a d1 basketball player
I saw him dunk
I saw him dish
I saw him lead when the other star, Nelson Phillips was struggling
And then, after WR blew a 10 point lead, I saw Jacolbey Owens put his team on his back and win a state championship for his school with a shot that had his coach praying for a foul.
It is true that the young man hit the winning 3.
But with the game tied at 60, he went to the free thrown line and hit four straight free throws.
Man can play.
Why isn't he getting d1 looks or very few at least.
Well the coaches will say
He is on the small side
He can be physical
He isn't what we are looking for
Yes he is small, kid cant be more that 5'9 and 150 pounds.
Did I say he dunked tonight.
Coaches, get off your d1 pedestal and make this kid an offer and he will make you look smart in 2 years.
Yep , kids a baller.
Fact 2
As much as I love Andre Taylor at Central, Jamal Garman is THE best coach in Middle Georgia.
I mean for real , who can convince 10 seniors to keep playing basketball even though only five can play at a time.
Who can convince kids these days to practice their ass off because if they don't they wont play.
He has told me his practices are way harder than games because these kids are busting it trying to earn playing time.
10 seniors ?
Unheard of these days.
He also gave me a very clear answer a few months ago when I asked him about a kid who had improved so much in two years that the kid was probably going to play college basketball.
"Because we have a great coaching staff and we made him better and because the kid was willing to work his butt off, but wasn't getting it until he came here."
That's no cocky, that's honestly
Another great quote "We respect everyone we play but we don't fear anyone.
Well they were playing the giant Thursday night with a team that has been to the state championship game 8 of the last 12 years.
They slapped Warner Robins around for a quarter, and those Miller Grove guys were talking sooo sooo much trash early.
Look who won though,
Last Fact number 3
Nelson Phillips had an off game and went 16 and 10.
kid will start at Ga State next year
He will prob lead his team to at least 2 NCAA tournaments.
He will no doubt be all conference
Kid can straight play.
By the way did I tell you that I graduated from Warner Robins ?
Proud of you guys
It is always great to come back home!
